The Charles bridge (Czech: Karlův most) is a historic bridge that crosses the Vltava river in Prague, Czech Republic. The bridge is one of the most notable tourist attractions of Prague and crosses the river from the Old Town side to the Lesser Town (Malá Strana) of the city.
Charles bridge was originally built in 1357 by Charles IV as the first stone bridge in Prague after more than 600 years of wooden bridge history. The bridge was designed as a bow bridge with 16 pillars and a wooden covering. It had both pedestrian and horse cart lanes and several small chapels were built in the middle of the bridge.
In the 18th century, the bridge was in disrepair, which meant that some parts were reconstructed in 1741. This renovation gave Charles bridge its current two-arched form and decorated many parts with Baroque statues, making the bridge even more attractive for tourists.
Charles bridge is today one of the main attractions in Prague and a very popular destination for both locals and tourists. Music: Antonín Dvořák - Serenade for strings in E major (1876)
It was the summer of 1893, and a powerful cultural force had come to town. Anton Dvorak, one of the most renowned composers of the time, had set up shop in New York City after being invited to America to be the head of the National Conservatory of Music.
Over the next few months, Dvorak immersed himself in the city’s vibrant culture, taking inspiration from both the music of Native Americans, as well as popular American folk tunes from the time.
In his time there, Dvorak made numerous connections with several of the city’s most prominent musicians and artists. Many of these relationships, such as with conductor Theodore Thomas, would go on to heavily influence his compositions during his later years.
He also befriended renowned writers such as Mark Twain and performed with African-American spiritual singers and composers. Such experiences greatly shaped the unique style of music that he went on to create upon his return to Europe, later becoming one of the first classical composers to merge elements of American music into his work.
In his two short years in America, Dvorak composed his most famous works of the time, including the New World Symphony and the American Quartet. He also wrote several pieces specifically for African-American students at the National Conservatory, which has since gone on to become some of the world's most important pieces of music.
Dvorak's time in New York City shaped him as a musician, and the lasting impression he made on America's own distinct musical culture continues to resonate today.
