Wow, hard to find anyone who has truly earned the title of Broadway legend who is still going and even stronger as Dolly Gallagher Levi another Broadway legend as a character. Not only has Betty Buckley brought Dolly to life. She actually brings the whole show to life with Dolly's outrageous personality and a wonderful supporting cast with a standout performance by Lewis J. Stadlen as Horace Vandergelder.
The show is everything a great Broadway musical should be and then some. You become friends with Dolly and laugh but real deep laughter the type you can share with really close friends.
Broadway legend, you bet! Its been 35 years since Betty Buckley won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a musical for her role as Grizabella in the original Broadway production of Cats and was one of the hosts for the opening of the Cat Club. She went on to play Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard (1994–96) in both London and New York, receiving a 1995 Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical, and was nominated for the 1997 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Triumph of Love. Her other Broadway credits include 1776 (1969), Pippin (1973), and The Mystery of Edwin Drood (1985).
Coming down the stairs of Harmonia Gardens restaurant in the iconic scene spotlighting the title song of “Hello, Dolly!” it is unbelievable the energy this 71-year-old brings to the role of Dolly! I want to know what vitamins she is taking because she moves like a millennial across the stage.
In the grand tradition of really great musical theater don't miss this one! Hello, Dolly was always a fantastic show and Betty is one of the absolute best who has played the iconic role of Dolly Gallagher Levi. You will find a new friend and have numerous bouts of laughter! Go, enjoy!
