A history of excellence When the construction of the Queen Mary stopped in 1931, only one year after work began, the British Government loaned Cunard the funds to finish constructing Queen Mary and build a sister ship (Queen Elizabeth). Cunard White Star come together when a new company was formed in May 1934 with Cunard owning 62% share. In 1947 the Cunard bought the remaining 38% share from White Star’s creditors.
